What causes foot pain?

Your foot alone has 26 bones and many muscles, ligaments and tendons. This means that foot pain can come from any number of problems with those bones or tissues. Often, foot pain originates from normal wear-and-tear or trauma, but can occur from other problems as well. Injury and overuse aside, medical conditions such as bone spurs, arthritis and various diseases contribute to foot pain. Your Marietta podiatrists can help you determine the root cause of your pain.

What are some common foot disorders?

There are various causes of foot pain, including:

  • bone spurs
  • tendon ruptures
  • tendonitis
  • bursitis
  • broken bones
  • flat feet
  • bunions
  • arthritis
  • stress fractures
  • tassel tunnel syndrome
  • plantar fasciitis
  • plantar warts
  • ingrown toenails

How can my podiatrist help?

Sometimes, at-home care allows the body to heal itself. Foot pain often responds well to ice packs and rest. Ice your foot several times a day for 15 minutes and stay off of your foot as much as possible. If the pain remains after several weeks of at-home care, it is time to see your podiatrist. There, x-rays, a physical examination and various testing help your doctor determine the best course of treatment for you. Often, your podiatrist will prescribe custom orthotics.

What are custom orthotics?

Orthotics refer to devices inserted into the shoes to align the feet and ankles, improve gait and distribute the body’s pressure evenly throughout the foot. While one-size-fits-all orthotics are available over-the-counter at most drug stores, professionally prescribed custom orthotics have proven to be more effective in treating foot pain. Orthotics are most often shoe insoles, but also come in the form of arch supports, foot cushions, and heel liners. Your doctor can help you choose the best orthotic for your situation.
