Do your feet ache at the end of the day or even by the middle of the day? You may benefit from orthotics. Marietta, GA, podiatrists Dr. orthoticsTrevor Beach and Dr. I. Cristina Verlezza of Premier Podiatry explain how the custom inserts can help you.

What are orthotics?

Orthotics are shoe inserts that are custom-designed by a podiatrist to fit your foot and they address your particular foot issue. They come in soft, semi-rigid, and rigid styles. Before we recommend a specific type of orthotics for you, we'll examine your feet and evaluate your gait. After we complete the design, we'll send it off for fabrication and ask you to return to our Marietta, GA, office in a week or two.

Are orthotics a better option than drugstore inserts?

Over-the-counter shoe inserts do provide additional cushioning for your feet, but often aren't effective in relieving the symptoms of common foot conditions such as gait issues, flatfoot, or heel pain. They're also not designed to last very long. After a few months of wear, you may need to replace them. Because orthotics are created with durable materials, they can last for years.

How can orthotics help me?

Orthotics keep your feet in the optimum position when you wear shoes. Proper alignment is crucial because your feet support the weight of your entire body. If there's an alignment problem due to overpronation, structural defect, arch problems, or another issue, you may experience pain in your feet, ankles, knees, or hips.

Orthotics are often used to improve the symptoms of flatfoot, address issues with your gait, and even improve your balance. Repositioning and supporting your feet with orthotics also reduces pressure on the muscles and tendons and may ease the symptoms of arthritis, plantar fasciitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, and help you avoid diabetic ulcers.

Do you run or walk for exercise? Wearing orthotics is a good way to prevent common overuse injuries, such as Achilles tendinitis, retrocalcaneal bursitis, or plantar fasciitis. Orthotics are a particularly good choice for people who spend all day on their feet. Although your feet were designed to handle standing and walking, standing for hours can lead to foot and ankle pain. Orthotics cushion your feet and act as shock absorbers.

Relieve your pain with orthotics. Call Marietta, GA, podiatrists Dr. Beach and Dr. Verlezza of Premier Podiatry at (770) 971-9820 to schedule your appointment.
