Easing your foot pain may be as simple as adding orthotics to your shoes. The prescription inserts not only relieve pain caused by foot andOrthotics ankle conditions, but may also decrease back, hip, and knee pain. Your Marietta, GA, podiatrists, Drs. Trevor Beach and Cristina Verlezza, provide the custom-made inserts for their patients at Premier Podiatry.

What are orthotics?

Any product that's advertised as one-size-fits-all, whether it's a tee shirt or shoe insert, rarely meets the needs of everyone who buys it. Although the inserts sold at drugstores do cushion your feet and offer a little arch support, they're not designed to address your particular foot and ankle issues. As a result, your foot condition may not get better and may even worsen.

Orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts created specifically for you, and you alone, by your foot doctor. Although they cushion your feet and offer arch support just like over-the-counter products, they offer many more benefits and can be tailored to fit your particular foot problem.

How can orthotics help me?

Orthotics improve the alignment of your foot while you wear shoes as well as reduce pain, control foot movement, improve balance, and decrease pressure on the joints, muscles, tissues, tendons, and ligaments in your foot.

They can help control:

  • Overpronation: Overpronation occurs when you roll the inside of your foot inward when you walk. The biomechanical problem can cause pain not only in your foot but in your back and legs and may increase your risk of plantar fasciitis. The condition occurs when the plantar fascia on the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed, which triggers heel pain. Orthotics prevent your foot from turning inward, helping you avoid these painful problems.
  • Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Blisters are more than a minor inconvenience if you have diabetes. Burst blisters can quickly become infected sores, which can be very difficult to treat. Orthotics reduce pressure on your foot, decreasing your risk of blisters.
  • Sports-Related Foot Injuries and Conditions: Foot imbalances and other issues can lead to overuse injuries, such as Achilles tendinitis, retrocalcaneal bursitis, plantar fasciitis, and back and leg pain. Luckily, orthotics offer a simple way to avoid foot and ankle conditions that will keep you on the sidelines.

Orthotics are also recommended if you have:

  • Flat feet
  • Bursitis
  • Bunions
  • Hammertoe
  • Foot or heel pain
  • Back, knee, hip or ankle pain
  • Arthritis
  • Tarsal tendinitis
  • Bunions
  • Uneven leg lengths
  • A foot imbalance or structural issue
