Warts, one of the most common types of skin conditions, can be particularly painful when they appear on the bottom of your feet. Dr. I. wartsChristina Verlezza and Dr. Trevor Beach, your Marietta, GA foot doctors at Premier Podiatry, share information about warts and explain what you can do about them.

What causes warts?

Plantar warts, the type of warts you see on the soles of your feet, occur if you've been exposed to the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters through small breaks or cuts in your skin. You can catch the virus if you have skin-to-skin contact with someone who has it or come in contact with surfaces contaminated by the virus, such as public locker room or shower room floors.

What do plantar warts look like?

Plantar warts are bumpy and contain dark lines or bumps that are caused by leaking blood vessels. Plantar warts may be the same color as your skin or may be brown, grey, pink or white. Although you might initially only notice a small bump, warts can grow if they're not removed. Warts may spread to other areas of your body if you don't wash your hands after touching them.

How can I get rid of plantar warts?

You'll find a variety of preparations at your local drugstore designed to get rid of warts. Although these products may be helpful in some cases, they're often not effective because it's hard for the medicine to penetrate your skin and penetrate deep into the core of the wart.

What can I do if home treatment doesn't work?

Your podiatrist offers wart treatments that are much more effective than drugstore products. Common treatments include freezing off the wart with a liquid nitrogen treatment or removing the wart during a minor surgical procedure. Laser treatment can also be used to kill wart cells without damaging the surrounding skin.

Instead of spending months trying to get rid of your warts, why not make an appointment with your podiatrist? Call Dr. Verlezza and Dr. Beach, your Marietta, GA foot doctors at Premier Podiatry at (770) 971-9820 to schedule your consultation.
